Lady Lancers beat El Rancho Dons in Conference Game

The La Serna varsity basketball team won Wednesday’s home conference game against El Rancho High School from Pico Rivera by a score of 46-44. The team is now 4-0 in the Del Rio League with four more games in the second round.

The Lady Lancers had a fast start that left the surprised Dons trailing behind 12-4. At one point in the first quarter, the Lancers made an eight point run, thanks to sophomore point guard Aleksa Gonzalez and senior team captain Izabella Apodaca, each making fast breaks. According to Apodaca, “I think that we were really prepared and able to execute everything we needed to effectively.”

Captain Rosalie Avalos helped the Lancers with a leading score of 16 points and bring the second quarter to a score of 25. The Lancers led with an excellent defensive strategy that allowed them to snag rebounds and rattle the Dons. Gonzalez said, “It was a good game with tons of energy. We definitely played well together, making little mistakes but we picked each other back up. We won as a team.” Hailey Phillips added, “It was a well rounded game.”

After the half the Lancers struggled on the offensive side, only scoring eight points and allowed the Dons to catch up in the third quarter scoring 14 points. “We played very very hard,” Coach Steve Hemenway said after the game. “We set up a good game plan, and did what we needed to do, breaking their press and limiting their post play.”

The fourth quarter was down to the wire with the Lancers leading by a small gap slowly being closed by the Dons. The Lancers out scored the Dons by one point (13 to 12) in the quarter, winning by free throws made by Brooklyn Vega (3-4), Avalos (1-2) and Apodaca (1-2). Apodaca also made two three pointers bringing the final score to 46-44 Lancers.

As Vega put it, “It was a good game.”
